Television Performance Skills Print E-mail

  • Do your media interview skills translate to television and video?
  • Do television and video capture your confidence and poise?
We help senior executives broadcast leadership by capitalizing on the dynamics of television and video.

This half-day intensive leadership skills development session covers television and video performance, particularly in a media interview setting. The session is an extension of our general press skills development sessions . We offer it as a stand-alone session or as one that can be combined with press skills development training.

The general rules for engaging journalists to communicate leadership apply to the television medium. Our television coaching focuses on how this visual medium distorts performance in both positive and negative ways. Participants learn how certain postures and expressions that appear natural in real life come across  on-screen as angry, defensive, or nervous. They also discover how apparent ease before the camera often speaks more loudly to viewers than factual content. We teach participants verbal and non-verbal techniques to help them avoid television’s negative distortions and play into its positive ones. Participants also work on preparing clear, concise and compelling messages that capitalize on the visual and verbal dynamics of television interviews. Throughout the session we emphasize the importance of projecting credible and authoritative leadership, especially in times of crisis and change.

Session participants also will undergo a series of simulated television interviews of increasing intensity and hostility that rigorously test the skills we present. All interviews will be videotaped. After each interview, our Fellows will give participants feedback and further coaching on specific techniques to improve television performance.

We custom-tailor our sessions to fit our clients’ needs. Our Fellows have over 25 years of experience in effective media relations, covering all media. We offer skills-building for participants at all levels of experience and for all types of television interviews, including interviews for specific television programs such as 60 Minutes, Dateline, 20/20, or Moneyline. We also can structure the session to emphasize interviews that are live, taped, in-studio, remote, solo or panel, friendly or hostile and where interviewees are speaking to a reporter or into-the-camera.

We also prepare executives for press conferences, satellite media tours, TelePrompTer presentations, internal video presentations and internet webcasts.
